Joe Rogan isn’t just a comedian, UFC commentator, actor, and popular podcast host—he’s also a serious martial artist. In addition to being a black belt in BJJ and taekwondo, Rogan has experience in boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. In other words, Joe Rogan is not someone you want to mess with. Several years back, an obnoxious clubgoer learned this lesson the hard way.
Back in 2004, Joe Rogan got into heated argument about immigration with a man outside of the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, California. After going back and forth for a while, Joe said to the man:
“You’re a little crazy. That’s the problem with talking to you. That’s the problem with talking to you. You want to be right about all these things. Because you think about these things all the time, and you’re not listening to anybody’s opinion. You just want to be right.”
The man then directed an expletive at Rogan and poked him aggressively in the shoulder. Rogan then said:
“Touch me again, and I’m going to choke you out on camera.”
The man then poked Rogan again and, true to his word, Rogan placed him in a guillotine choke.
The man quickly submitted, and Rogan released the choke. The men then laughed off the incident. Clearly, Rogan is not a person you want to lay your hands on without permission.
Here’s a video of the encounter:
What is a Guillotine Choke?
The guillotine choke is a chokehold that is applied from the front of an opponent. The choke involves using the arms to encircle an opponent’s neck in a fashion similar to a guillotine. The technique can either function as a wind choke (tracheal compression) or a blood choke (carotid artery compression) depending on how it is applied. In the video above, had Rogan held the choke for just a few more seconds, the man would have lost consciousness.
Joe Rogan Chokes Radio Host
The encounter above isn’t the only time Joe Rogan has choked someone on camera. Back in 2008, a radio host asked Joe to demonstrate a chokehold on him. Joe obliged his request, applying a rear naked choke on the man. Once Joe applied the choke, it only took about two seconds for the radio host to lose consciousness. Choking someone out that quickly requires a high level of strength and technique—two things Joe Rogan clearly possesses.

What is a Rear Naked Choke?
The rear naked choke is a chokehold applied from an opponent’s back. The word “naked” indicates that the choke doesn’t require the use of a gi (martial arts uniform) to perform.
The rear naked choke has two variations. In one version, the attacker’s arm encircles the opponent’s neck. The person applying the choke then grabs his or her own biceps on the opposite arm.
In the second version of the choke, the attacker clasps his or her hands together instead of grabbing the biceps after encircling the opponent’s neck.
